5 Preparation Tips for your First Day on the Job

The first day of a new job can be like the first day at school so it’s only natural to experience a mixture of emotions.

You want to make a great impression on your new boss as well as co-workers and appear on top of your game! So, here are 5 tips to help you prepare for your first day.

1. Get a good night’s sleep

You want to start the first day of your new job feeling fresh, alert and energised, therefore I would recommend an early night. No doubt the night before you will experience an unsettled sleep due to nerves. To prevent this aim to have tech-free evening, listen to some calming music and get to bed early.

2. Set an alarm (Or 5)

No one wants to be late on their first day, my advice is to set multiple alarms to ensure you are up on time. Avoid pressing snooze as this could lead to you sleeping in or arriving late.

3. Know where you are going

Check… Double Check… Triple check… your bus or train journey to work. Ensure you arrive at least 10 minutes before your start time.

If you haven’t done the commute before and are particularly bad at directions I would suggest doing a dry run prior to your first day.

4. Pack your lunch for the first day

Preparation is key. If you are not familiar with the area it will be hard to know where the best places are to grab lunch. My advice is to start a new job with a routine so aim to take lunch daily. However, if your co-workers ask you to lunch, go. It’s important to mix with the team, so save your lunch for another day.

5. Dress to impress

We all know that first impressions count when meeting your new team on the first day. Choose an outfit the night before, corporate wear is best and a great pair of heels. When it comes to styling all attempts should be made to create a clean polished look.

Starting a new job can be nerve-racking and scary, but just remember everyone else in the office has been in the same position. Try and relax and be yourself. You will only be the new person once, so it is important to make a good first impression and your Kennedy Reid Consultant will always be available to help you through this period.
